Construction News - Boulevard Road Improvements

Anticipated Projects:

  • Boulevard Road Sidewalk from 22nd Avenue to 30th Avenue: Construction of a sidewalk and a pedestrian island.
  • Log Cabin Road & Boulevard Road Intersection: Construction of a two-lane roundabout at the intersection.
  • Morse Merryman Road & Boulevard Road Intersection: Construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection. The roundabout will slow traffic, increase safety and include bicycle and pedestrian access.
  • 22nd Avenue and Boulevard Road Intersection: Construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection. This roundabout will be similar in design to the roundabout at the Morse Merryman intersection.
  • Public Art: The City contracted with Steve Jensen to develop public art that will be incorporated into the finished project. He designed ten carved wooden columns that will be located in the center of the roundabout and an additional two carved wooden columns at the southeast corner adjacent to the new storm pond. For more information on Mr. Jensen's work visit his web page.

Completed Projects:

  • Odor Control Facility: STEP sewer systems along Boulevard Road used to produce an unpleasant odor. To address this problem, the City installed an Odor Control Facility on the west side of Boulevard Road at the south edge of Washington Middle School. This has resolved the odor issue until a permanent sewer is constructed.

Background:

In 2004, the City initiated a project to explore options to improve safety and mobility along the Boulevard Road Corridor. The City sought and received active public participation throughout the study and the public's comments were integrated into the final study and alternatives for the corridor.

In April 2006, the Boulevard Road Corridor Study was accepted by the Olympia City Council. This study identified what is working well and what is in need of improvement along the corridor.

The City's long-term plan for the Boulevard Road Corridor includes many improvements to increase safety and mobility for motorists, pedestrians and bicylists.
